Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedation during dental treatment which can be the result of:

  • Nitrous Oxide - (also known as laughing gas) used to calm a patient
  • General Anesthetics - used to put patients to sleep

Sedation DentistryBlue Stone Hills Dentistry is happy to provide our patients in Harrisonburg, VA and the surrounding areas with either Nitrous Oxide or pre-medication with prescription sedatives, depending on what is appropriate for each patient.

General Notes

Before using a sedative or anesthetic, it is important to tell us our doctors and staff about any medications or medical treatments you are currently taking/receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, your dentist will talk to you about the process of sedation and provide pre-and post-sedation instructions. Your dentist will then determine your pain tolerance and administer the most appropriate sedation dentistry treatment based on your case.

Which Sedation Dentistry Treatment is for Me?

Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps, or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures that often require some sort of sedation include:

  • Fillings
  • Dental Crowns
  • Dental Bridges
  • Root Canals
  • Cosmetic Dentistry Services
  • Periodontal Treatment

Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during a dental visit.

Nitrous Oxide/”Laughing Gas”

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as “laughing gas,” is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps anxious patients relax during dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit.

Nitrous Oxide Post-Op

After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and oxygen is administered for 5 - 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea. Any effects that are experienced wear off almost immediately. h-nitrousOxideYour dentist will provide you with pre-and post-sedation instructions.

Prescription Sedatives

Prescription Sedatives, such as Triazolam, are often administered to patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes. Triazolam is often selected for its rapid onset and limited duration of effect. This form of sedation dentistry is administered via prescription prior to the appointment and should be taken approximately 1 hour before the appointment. Prescription sedatives allow more dentistry to be completed in fewer appointments as well as allowing complex procedures to be performed in less time.

Prescription Sedatives Post-Op

The effects of the prescription sedative will wear off within 1 -2 hours post procedure. Patients are often drowsy for a few hours after a procedure and will require assistance getting home.
