Nitrous Oxide for Anxiety

We understand some patients come to us with serious dental anxiety that can make receiving dental care difficult. For that reason, our doctors are pleased to offer nitrous oxide or "laughing gas" as a treatment option to make these experiences stress-free and easy.

Many patients, particularly if they've had no experience with nitrous oxide in the past, might be curious about what to expect with this treatment. Nitrous oxide is a very safe and well-studied antidote for pain and anxiety and is administered in combination with oxygen in a nasal hood that fits comfortably over patient's noses.  It produces feelings of relaxation and euphoria. Patients will sometimes compare it to a "floating" sensation. Nitrous oxide concentration can be changed during the procedure to adjust to a patient's level of anxiety. It doesn't "knock" a patient out or produce complete dissociation, so patient's are still conscious and communicative during appointments. As an added benefit, it's effects wear off right as the appointment concludes, which makes resuming your daily schedule easy.

At our office, we've found nitrous oxide to be effective for those with a mild to moderate level of dental anxiety. It's a safe and reliable form of sedation for children and it has relatively few contraindications.
