Teeth Whitening

Teeth WhiteningFew things signal confidence more than a dazzling smile. However, discolored teeth may hold us back and keep us from smiling confidently. Our teeth naturally discolor over time. Food, beverage, and lifestyle choices are also contributing factors toward tooth discoloration. Beverages like coffee, tea, alcohol or soda can lead to tooth discoloration, as well as tobacco use and poor hygiene. Discolored teeth can also be the result of childhood medications and illness.

Whatever the cause for your discolored teeth, Blue Stone Hills Dentistry takes great satisfaction in restoring your beautiful smile. Teeth whitening services are among the most requested services in our Harrisonburg, VA office, and continue to gain popularity. Our professional cosmetic dentistry team uses a variety of whitening procedures. One of the most popular is the Kor Whitening system. This system involves the application of a gentle carbamide peroxide gel in custom fitted trays, which can be applied in our office or at home. After an allotted time, the trays are removed, revealing your whiter smile.

Kor vs. OTC

Though this process may sound strikingly similar to those offered in OTC whitening kits, it is safe to say that not all whitening systems are equally created. There are key differences between the Kor Whitening system and those offered in OTC kits. Here are just a few:

  • The carbamide peroxide gel in the Kor Whitening system is only available to professionals.
  • The Kor Whitening system contains no preservatives and is refrigerated to maintain product quality throughout processing and until the product is applied in the dentist’s office.
  • OTC whitening systems typically contain preservatives that often contribute toward tooth sensitivity.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Fillings are very commonplace, however, fillings that match the exact color of our existing teeth are relatively new. Amalgam fillings are gray or silver, however, new tooth-colored material has been developed that is stronger, longer-lasting, and more aesthetically pleasing. Composed of porcelain and composite resin, this newly developed material bonds directly with the tooth. Because it bonds directly with the tooth, it strengthens the tooth by restoring its original shape. Fillings made of this new material can even be dyed to match the color of the existing tooth to provide the most natural-looking result possible. This new filling material also requires less removal of healthy tooth structure than amalgam fillings, preserving more of the natural tooth.

Porcelain Veneers

Another option to quickly improve your smile is porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are made from a semi-translucent substance that is custom fitted and bonded directly onto your front teeth. Porcelain veneers may be an option for you if you have:

  • Spaces between teeth
  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth

Porcelain veneers can provide an alternative to lengthy and painful dental procedures, and offer an aesthetically pleasing solution to orthodontic treatment. In most cases, veneer application can be completed in only two visits.

Dental Bonding

If you have chipped, cracked or discolored teeth, or unsightly gaps in your teeth, composite dental bonding may offer a solution for you. Unlike veneers or crowns, composite dental bonding removes little, if any of the original tooth.

Composite dental bonding has many advantages:

  • The tooth’s original structure is unaffected.
  • It is relatively inexpensive.
  • Composite resins come in many colors; therefore closely matching your tooth’s natural color is more possible.
  • Composite bonding is a fast process and can usually be completed in an hour.

Though there are many positive factors involved with composite dental bonding, some risks exist as well. Here are a few of the risks:

  • Composite dental bonds are not as durable as veneers or dental crowns and may need re-touching or replacement.
  • Composite dental bonds stain easily and require proper care and cleaning.
  • To ensure the longest possible duration, composite bonds should be brushed and flossed daily.
  • Common staining elements like coffee, tea, tobacco, and certain candies and foods may cause problems.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign Clear Aligners A beautiful smile includes both dazzlingly white and straight teeth. The straightened teeth to complete your lovely smile may be as simple as Invisalign Clear Aligners. Invisalign Clear aligners are a great option for straightening teeth because they don’t involve brackets or wires like braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear, customized removable appliances called aligners. Aligners are also virtually undetectable, so alignment takes place inconspicuously.

How Does Invisalign Work?

The Invisalign system combines 3-D computer graphics technology with the time-proven science of orthodontics. Invisalign aligners are designed to move your teeth in small steps to the final position determined by your doctor. Each aligner is calibrated and customized to each stage of your treatment plan.

An initial visit to Blue Stone Hills Dentistry will determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign aligners. If you are a candidate, Invisalign will begin determining your treatment plan using advanced computer technology and will translate that plan into a series of finely calibrated aligners. Each aligner is worn for about 2 weeks and is removed only to eat, and to brush and floss your teeth. As you replace each aligner with the next, your teeth will begin to gradually move until the final prescribed alignment is achieved. Treatment times vary case by case but generally last 6-18 months.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

Treatment costs are based upon many factors, including the severity of your orthodontic issues and your approximate length of treatment. We will give you a breakdown of all applicable fees before treatment is administered. Most Invisalign cases in our offices range from $3,200-$5,400 when completed.

What Happens Following Treatment?

All orthodontic patients are instructed to wear retainers at night indefinitely. Sleeping in retainers will ensure a healthy bite and maintain the new position of your teeth. For further information regarding Invisalign Clear Aligners, visit our Invisalign page.
